Helping Every Student Everyday
I remember reading about Express to Success in an article in UNOTES. It sounded appealing because students were paired off with alumni in the career field of their choice. This program gave me and other students a foot in the door to achieve the goals and aspirations we hope to obtain in the future.
I was paired with Dr. Schauer, the division chief of medical oncology at Hartford Hospital. I arrived at the Helen and Harry Jack Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital extremely early and sat in the patients’ waiting room. When the Cancer Center opened, Dr. Schauer greeted me with a most warm welcome. We introduced ourselves and I accompanied him on his hospital rounds. I felt extremely honored to have him as my mentor.
When we visited patients, Dr. Schauer explained everything he was doing. I was inspired by his kind and gentle words. Every patient he talked with loved him. I spent two full days with Dr. Schauer, accompanying him on hospital rounds as well as seeing patients in his office. This experience has forever touched my heart, and has sparked a passion that I intend to follow as my career path.
I was also impressed with the fact that Dr. Schauer treated me as an equal. Today many physicians are extremely busy and so understaffed that they cannot take time out of their day for student fellowships. I cannot adequately express my gratitude for his time, and hope he knows what a difference he has made in my life.
I come from a single parent household and have a younger brother at home. Without alumni donations I would not be able to afford school. Every bit helps and you have no idea how different my life would be without this opportunity.
I would like to thank all of the alumni who donate their time and money to the University; all of their help and contributions have made it possible for me to pursue a better life for myself through education. – Chelsea Walton, Class of 2010
